2012

  • 25th April.  A talk by Graham Hicks on keeping and breeding waterfowl. See Graham's website www.waterfowlworld.co.uk  We are hoping to arrange a visit to see Grahams Ducks and Geese in July.

  • 11th April. The AGM of the Border and North Shropshire Smallholders Group took place at 7.30pm at the Llanyblodwell and Porthywaen Institute. 

  • 28th March.  Andy Clough from Walford College gave a talk on the pre and post lambing period and offered advice on how to look after new flock additions.

  • 11th March Practical Hedge Laying.

  • 22nd February. A talk by David Middlemiss from the Dexter Cattle Society   www.dextergroupmws.com 

  • 25th January.  'Pork Butchery demonstration'  by Rob Cunningham from Maynard's of Whitchurch www.maynardsfarm.co.uk Rob brought along a complete side of pork and showed how it is processed into the various joints and other products.

2011

  • 14th December. Christmas meal, social and Quiz at the White Lion, Llynclys.

  • 23rd November. Spinning and Weaving by Textile Artist Fiona Nisbet who showed samples of her work.                   

  • 26th October. Bee Keeping and what you need to get started with Brian Goodwin, president of the Shropshire Bee Keepers Association.

  • 28th September.  A talk by Howell Dodd of BTCV ( www.btcv.org.uk ) on country crafts in general but concentrating on hedge-laying. There will be a practical follow up meeting in Jan or Feb 2012.

  • 24th August. Evening walk from the Barley Mow Pub in Trefonen to the top of the Moelydd and return, followed by a tour of the micro brewery and the chance to sample their ales.

  • 20th July. A talk on Goat Keeping and Husbandry by Rose Hayden, a member of the Toggenburg Breeders Society.  A visit to see her Goats is planned for the new year when the young are born.

  • 29th June. An evening visit and tour of Fordhall Farm. The Farm near Market Drayton has been organic for 65 years. They rear beef, lamb and Gloucester old spot pigs.   http://www.fordhallfarm.com/index.php  

  • 25th May. Bread making with Sheila Sagar of the Shrewsbury Bakehouse  www.shrewsburybreads.co.uk  Sheila is hoping to run a bread making course later in the year which will be advertised nearer the time.

  • 27th April. Plant and shrub propagation, Derek Jones

  • 6th April.  AGM. All members welcome to attend to have their say on the running of the group.

  • 23rd March. Sheep welfare and caring for the new born lamb, Nerys Davies of ADAS

  • 23rd February - A Poultry & Waterfowl Forum – have all your questions about keeping poultry and fowl answered by our resident panel of experts.

  • 26th January 2011 - A social and a quiz designed to test your general knowledge and your knowledge of all things related to smallholding and animals.

2010

  • 15th December, a bit of pre Christmas fun and relaxation with practical felt making led by Hazel Brend.

  • 24th November, Mark Benger will talk about keeping pigs and in particular Gloucester Old Spots.

  • 15thNovember, Committee Meeting starting at the usual time of 7.30 pm.  This open to all members.

  • 27th October, Caring for sheep through the winter & getting the ram ready. Nerys Davies of ADAS

  • 22nd September, Bee Keeping with Brian Goodwin, president of the Shropshire Bee Keepers Association.

  • 15th September. Starting out in Smallholding. This evening was sponsored by Allen & Page, suppliers of natural animal feeds.  Members talked about their smallholding experiences, both good and bad! A successful meeting with eighteen visitors.

  • 7th August, Members manned a stand at Oswestry Show.

  • 28th July, a farm visit for members only to Cilmawr, Llangedwyn. The visit was hosted by Mr & Mrs Eifion Williams.

  • 23rd June.  The Master Composters, all you need to know about composting.

  • 26th May This month we have a talk by Dr Martin Goulding about wild boar in the UK. 

  • 28th April,  This month we had a talk about buying and keeping horses from Nicola Fritter.

  • 14th April, AGM. All members welcome to attend to have their say on the running of the group.

  • 24th March, An illustrated talk entitled  "The Complete Owl" by BBC Wildlife Photographer, Michael Leach.  

  • 24th February, Keeping and breeding poultry, Andy Cawthray.

  • 6th February,  Demonstration of pruning fruit trees by Derek Jones at Bronygarth, Oswestry. Email for more details.
